A well written book on one of America's most colorful citizens. Benjamin Franklin was a true free thinker and agreat believer in "paying it forward." He was not well educated except by himself. He was extremely talented invery many ways. He was a businessman, diplomat, humorist, free thinker, activist, scientist, statesman, printer,postmaster, shop keeper, author, politician, publisher, and inventor to name a few.Franklin only had two years of formal education. His parents were Congregationalists which was the basic beliefsystem of the Puritans who first settled the colonies. He was intended by his parents to become a minister andthe main reason he did not was education. His father could not afford the education the clergy would have required.So, Franklin became an apprentice printer in his brother's business. He wrote 14 letters to the newspaper hisbrother printed under another name and they were printed and well received. He later told his brother he hadwritten them. He bought books with any extra money he earned and taught himself math, grammar and philosophy.His brother was jailed several times for some of the things he printed and finally was not allowed to publish hisown newspaper which Benjamin took over. There had always been problems between the brothers with Jamesoften beating his much younger brother. Finally, Benjamin left Boston by selling some of his books. He made hisway back to Philadelphia and found work with a printer.It was here that he was noticed by the Governor of the colony and was told he would set him up in the printingbusiness. He ended up going to London to get a press and supplies but the letter of credit from the Governornever came so he worked in London as a typesetter for 2 years to earn his passage home.On arriving home he learned that his girlfriend had married and had been abandoned immediately afterward.They could not marry due to her marriage so they lived together as common law husband and wife.The Franklins ran a variety store selling everything imaginable. He began printing pamphlets and finally anewspaper and magazine before gaining the contract to print paper money. He wrote and published PoorRichard's Almanac for 25 years. This was a popular publication that had everything from weather forecaststo wise sayings in it. The magazine he published was later named the Saturday Evening Post.He was asked by the colony of Pennsylvania to represent them in London. He spent nearly 20 years thereoff and on as a diplomat. After returning he traveled all over the 13 colonies assessing their postal systemsand writing. He tried to maintain the relationship with the British especially after living in England, but finallyleaned toward independence after the tax laws went into effect. It was not the taxes he minded; it was thefact that the English citizens of the colonies did not have to pay the taxes. He definitely considered himselfan English citizen and therefore became more and more outspoken.Franklin played a large role in American Independence and in American life. He and likeminded friendscame together to form the first hospital, university, fire department and other institutions in Philadelphia.He is known as an inventor because of his work with electricity where he learned about positive and negativeenergy. He made the first pair of bifocals, and the first lightning rod. He never patented his inventions becausehe intended them to be used for the betterment of society.This was an informative book, but did not talk much about actual events. It reads more like a college paper.I read this book for free on the publisher's website for my honest review.
Benjamin Franklin is an interesting man with a rich history. I greatly enjoyed reading this short, condensed version. Like always, it did a great job of dispelling myths and enriching this man's story and journey.I learned lots of new things about this great man. The book was delightful to read. I greatly enjoyed doing so and would recommend to fans of the genre.For those who don't have a lot of time or money to spend, this book provides everything you need to know--and it's easy to remember everything from the book.

I expected a boring, lengthy essay about the major accomplishments of Franklin, as well as brief and way-too-simple overview of his personal life. What I got in return was something entirely different, with Kennedy going into great detail about Franklin's family, the power dynamic between Franklin and his older brother, and the ways in which society and neighbors viewed franklin at various stages of his life. It doesn't sugarcoat or otherwise gloss over the less-than-perfect portions of Franklin's character, nor does it serve to destroy the patriotic, founding-father image we have crafted for Franklin as a nation. This is definitely one of the more objective biographies I have read, and it seems to be the perfect length to truly elaborate on Franklin without droning on or going too deep, leaving the opportunity for further exploration if desired. The tone of the book is perfect for most ages, as it doesn't "dumb down the story", nor does use inaccessible language. I can see an inquisitive high-schooler reading this and enjoying it as well as a college graduate. The author has also written on Newton, Einstein, and Darwin, and I plan to pick up each of these titles for future reading,
A great read, whether you're young or old, you'll enjoy this short book. There is a lot to learn from this read, great for homeschooling, summer vacation, or just because. There's so much people think they know about Benjamin Franklin, but not all of it is true! If you want to know the facts from fiction, I would definitely recommend this book!I enjoyed the read, it isn't long, but packs a lot of information. Kids would like it, my teen read it, he enjoyed it as much as I did.I was offered this book at a discount, in exchange for my unbias review. The discount has no impact on my review. Thank you
Benjamin Franklin is undoubtably one of America's most famous heroes. This book covers a lot of background info which may be boring to some, but it does help to understand Ben, the man. I enjoyed the book, as I am a Ben Franklin "fan" and also appreciate the difficulty that the people of that time had in forming this new country.
A tabular approach to the subject with noticable redundancies, the book lists the many things BF did without revealing much about his personality. Perhaps that is not possible in an icon of American history, but that doesn't make it any less notably absent.At one time most of the anecdotes related here would have been part of every primary school curriculum. I no longer assume that to be the case. Filling that void may justify the author's efforts
I really enjoyed this book. As a native Philadelphian I thought I knew all about Ben but this short, easy read proved me wrong. This is a very well written book (a few small editorial hiccups) that could be used in middle or even primary level history classes.
