And boy did this help. Instead of letting it linger on my kindle for a few weeks before finally pulling it up and casually sliding through the pages I dove right in. In fact, I have started to re-read the entire series of books and finally feel confident enough to bring my camera out in public where people are apt to ask me, {"Are you a photographer?".Anyway, without giving away any secrets or techniques, (you should really get this book if you want to learn more, just like everyone else), Dan has helped me re-learn how to be a photographer in the degital age, and without having to add a plethera of new gadgets to my bag.I suggest you read, follow suggestions and reference the material provided, it can be a great experience if you let it.
Let's get it straight from the onset that Dan's books are written for and aimed at novice photographers who simply want to produce better images than pointing and pressing the shutter button. Most beginners assume that they have to settle for whatever light is available. Dan clearly shows this is not the case and demonstrates how the options available - hard light, filtered light, fill light, make a tremendous difference in the end result. Constructive exercises help in learning the techniques necessary. There is an excellent bonus section on composition that only adds to the value of the book. I've been at all this for too long to have learned anything stunningly new; but the material is extremely well organized and is a terrific review of essentials.
Just did a quick read on this book. Dan has another good one here; but for me I think I will have to read it a couple times. As the title says it is about soft light - meaning in most cases flash or strobe photography. That is something I am still struggling with. A surprising section tells how to convert a cardboard box to a softbox for your flash. I have seen many videos on this sort of thing, but never expected Dan to suggest this. He also has a section in the back, not on lighting, but on composition pointers. A refresher course ( something I need all the time ). He covers things like vignetting, framing, keeping symmetry in your shots and reminds you to observe your background and surrounding area to prevent clutter. Good book Dan, I just need to read it more than once and keep my camera handy while doing that.
Dan has done it again! He is amazing in his knowledge and in sharing it also. There is a talent, I think, to sharing, or being able to impart knowledge to another. Also, as one poster said, he teaches how to make a soft box in this volume. That alone is worth getting the book. But there is so much more. When to used soft light to make your pictures very professional.I have watched photographers work with light in their studios and then saw the resulting product. It is just amazing how knowing what to do with light to achieve that look makes the difference in good photography and GREAT photography. Great job, Dan! I do recommend this book.
At first when I started reading the book, I was a bit confused. All this light talk is something I haven't got a grip on yet. Anyway, as I read I started to understand the difference between soft light and hard light. I'm very glad I read this book. I love the activity that Dan gives us to do, make your own soft box. I think doing stuff like that is awesome. It really teaches the inside out of the soft box. I think it's a great learning tool. When I was in college, taking some photography classes, we had to build our own camera. It actually worked. But to the point, it was an easy way for me to really see how a camera works inside. Like the soft box idea in this book. It's a great way for me to learn about stuff and it not be boring. So thank you again Dan for a great and easy to read book.
This is another of the series that Dan has put out and is typical of his delivery and style. This, like his other titles is a short and sweet overview of the topic that can serve as a good introduction to the use of soft lighting for someone just getting started, or a "refresher" for those who are a bit further along. It has enough detail and background material so that you are not just blindly told what to do, but not so much as to get you bogged down in technical details that may not be useful until you are much further along.Like most of Dan's books, it gives you some suggested exercises to try out the techniques with, which can be a great way to get yourself out and trying stuff. The cost of these books is reasonable.If you are a pro or advanced amateur, you may not find much that is new to you here. Most others will find at least a few ideas or tidbits that make this worth the price.
All of Dan's books are great and this one is no exception. I'm not a professional photographer but someone who's interested in photography. I want my pictures to look a certain way before I click and this book has helped me in achieving it.
I particularly enjoy this author's works because they are not so long that you forget what you read in the beginning, they contain a lot of useful information written in an easy to understand format. It feels as if you are having a conversation rather than reading, which makes it nice. And because he explores only one major topic in the book, you don't get bogged down and can really focus on learning and practicing what is being learned.
