With 25 years of exploring the Osa Peninsula and guiding night tours in the rainforest of Drake Bay, I have to say this is my favorite field companion to the amphibians of Costa Rica. Exceptional field guides – works that provide the perfect blend of portability with stunning photographs and truly engaging text – are a rare breed. So many fall short in one aspect or another. With this guide, though, the package is complete. Leenders has crafted a rare - and most valuable jewel.The book covers all 207 species of frogs, toads, salamanders, and caecilians in Costa Rica. Each species account includes a brief description, with distribution information in Costa Rica (and beyond), conservation status, and key characteristics. The accompanying photographs are not only stunning, but will literally guide explorers on what to look for to make accurate identifications in the field. This is accomplished through arrows and simple text that highlight the key distinguishing features. In addition, Leenders’ also includes photographs of similar species for comparative value.While all of these attributes make this a great resource, what I really love most about this book is the wealth of information it provides on the natural history of Costa Rica’s rich amphibian fauna. The graphics in this book are not only visually pleasing, but provide great insight into important diagnostic characteristics. As a herpetologist working in Costa Rica this book has become my go-to field resource for the difficult to identify species found throughout the country. I highly recommend this book for anyone traveling to Costa Rica or interested in herpetology.
