Excellent little history book. Who knew that the modern olympic games evolved from a few 19th century health and cultural clubs created by German immigrants. Fascinating insight on two different (but related) sub cultures: German immigrants and the "physical fitness" movement.
I lived in Cincinnati for many years, but reading this book was fascinating and eye-opening. While I knew some history on how German immmigrants influenced and shaped the city, I knew nothing of the unique sub-culture led by the Cincinnati Turners. From reading the book, I could visualize myself in that era, walking the streets of Over the Rhine, participating in the Turnverein firsthand, ordering a stein from the barkeep at the Turnhall, and engaging in political discussion with my extended German family. Honestly, I think it would be interesting to make a movie out of this, following closely the lives of a few of the families. I highly recommend the book not only for those who live or have lived in Cincy, but also anyone interested in American history and how immigrants helped shape the world we live in today.
