I liked this book overall. 300 is A LOT of recipes. This is a good starting place for people who want to cook low calorie but don't really have the knowledge.I found the artificial sweeteners & other artificial ingredients were given as options in some of the recipes, mostly in the breakfast section to make sweetened oatmeal, in the beginning section of the book. Butter Spray is also an option, you can use real butter. I cook mostly dinner recipes and those weren't sweet, and don't have sweeteners as an ingredient. It really wasn't loaded with fake ingredients like some of the reviews had me expecting.One strange thing, and I don't know if this is a pro or con, I guess it depends on the person, but a lot of the recipes were for one serving. Like foil packets, they only list enough ingredients for one packet instead of four. I thought it was strange because the book isn't listed as "cooking for one." Of course you can just multiply the ingredients to make more.

This is the best recipe book ive ever used. Im eating better now than ever before and cooking way more! Ive always tried to stay on the healthier side so I would eat more bland, tasteless foods which would later create cravings. Now that im using this cookbook, I don't have any cravings because im eating what I want to eat! The recipes are awesome and easy to use. There are some recipes that call for similar ingredients so you're not buying TONS of different things at the grocery store. For example: oats. There are a lot of breakfast recipes that call for oats and it just so easy that I can use them for other recipes as well! After having this book for about 3 weeks now, I ended up purchasing 4 other books by Hungry Girl and cannot wait until they arrive!

As others have noted, yes this whopper of a book does include its share of so-called "frankenfoods" and such but sometimes when your number one goal is to get or keep that weight off, something's gotta give.As the author of another 300 Calorie Cookbook, of course I've checked out Lisa's book. Mine is a bit different as it goes by the entire meal and strictly limits artificial and processed ingredients. Okay, so some people have beef with this cookbook series because the recipes all call for low-fat, fat-free, sugar-free and "processed" products. As a dietitian, I really love this cookbook for beginners and people without much time to prepare healthful meals. Some of the portions are super tiny, but when the calorie count for an entree is only 200 calories you can easily double the portion and stay within a very reasonable calorie count. In general, we are eating too many calories, fat calories, saturated fats, and added sugars. Cookbooks like this one are a good guide for those who would like easy and cheap recipes to prepare.

I received this book today, and I eagerly flipped through each section of the book. I found both positive and negative aspects that I will list below.Positive:1) There is a huge variety of foods. Anything from mug meals to crock pot to skillet meals and everything in between that you can imagine is in here. There is a variety of flavors and cultures honored. I was extremely impressed.2) It is organized in an extremely easy-to-understand fashion. There is never multiple recipes on the same page like some cookbooks. The directions are well written and easy to follow.3) There are pictures of each recipe and cooresponding Weight Watchers Points Plus points on the HG website.4) There are some ingredient swap suggestions.5) The nutritional value per serving is featured at the top of each page. These include calories, sodium, carbs, protein, fiber, fat, and sugars.Negative:1) The sodium content is EXTEMELY HIGH! For some recipes, it is well over 1,000mg. This is not for all of them, but I was disappointed that many recipes were relatively high in sodium content (500mg+).2) The amount of processed foods used is crazy. This also adds to sodium content.3) While it is not a huge negative, there were many brand name products mentioned repeatedly. What bothers me is that some of these items are not available in my area.While I do feel disappointed with the negatives, I do not regret my purchase. I will be substituting processed foods for the real thing a lot (egg beaters for real eggs and homemade salsa for the canned for example), and also subbing low carb options when I can.If you feel comfortable enough to diverge from the recipe in terms of ingredients, I recommend doing so!
